Introduction
Donald Trump has, without a doubt, had one of the most turbulent and controversial presidencies in American History. The American political spectrum has become increasingly polarized throughout the years, and the American people are increasingly antagonizing each other, viciously attacking those with opposing opinions on and offline. The most one could hope for under such a time of divisiveness in our society is for his term to pass with as little catastrophic, world changing events as possible, however, life rarely pans out in ideal ways. If you are a human being, inhabiting the planet Earth right now, you are certainly more than aware of COVID-19, and the effects it has had on every facet of life, it's simply inescapable, and whether you agree with the ways it has been handled or not, we are all responsible for the health of the general public and safety of our peers.
In such a politicized, party oriented culture as ours is today, of course the president's handling of such a unprecedented event would be held under heavy scrutiny. Donald Trump has proven to be, by far, the most outspoken, raw, and unfiltered figurehead our country has ever seen, which depending on what side of the political spectrum you lay on, is what you most admire about him, or what angers you the most. Donald Trump has, throughout his presidency, bullied his contemporaries, disregarded facts, and ignored the opinions of his peers, doing as he pleases, with little repercussion or discipline. Donald Trump had just recently had impeachment hearings called off, the first serious hearings since the Clinton presidency, needless to say, the confidence in our president has been shaky at best, besides from his die-hard supporters in the right wing.
No country was sufficiently prepared for the rapid spread of the virus, we haven't had a pandemic on such a global scale since the Spanish influenza in the 1910’s, many countries took priority in defense against other potential threats, largely neglecting medicinal research and pandemic response funding. However, the U.S. has shown to have been particularly unprepared to deal with the spread of the virus. The entire U.S. economy was, and still is, seemingly on the verge of collapse, many of its social structures now obsolete, even those citizens most skeptical of the severity of the virus have been put under distress, and it is an indeterminate amount of time before things can ever fully return to “normal” (regardless of states’ attempts to open up businesses to “save the economy”).
With this research, I intend to attempt to capture the knee-jerk reactions of U.S. citizens to Donald Trump’s state of Emergency Address on the day it was announced, in an attempt to illustrate the people's biases, divisiveness, and political affiliations in the no man’s land that is the Youtube Comment section. The reason I want to capture only their immediate responses is that although most of us are still in the dark and ill-informed about COVID-19, at this point in time we were even more so ignorant, and many of us were panicked and confused. At this point in time, COVID-19 and the quarantine (to whatever extent you as an individual practice and follow its guidelines), has become the new norm for us, and we are steadily becoming desensitized from the bigger picture of what is happening in the world currently. The week around the State of emergency address was a peak of the zeitgeist and hysteria surrounding the early stages of the spread COVID-19 into the United States.
Data Collection:
To gather my data, I have scanned the top 50 comments to occur on the date of the announcement and the responses in their threads across several of the most popular uploads of the State of Emergency Address (CNN, FOX, MSNBC, Global News, ABC, Today, USA Today). I wanted to select News outlets from all sides of the political spectrum, to see the varied reactions of conflicting demographics, and their opinions on his handling of the situation, exploring the threads and interactions within them if they seem particularly controversial, or recieved a lot of responses.
I believe that this is the best method for collecting data on the initial reactions of the public, because as we have now had several weeks to accept and get used to living under quarantine, sitting back and becoming more informed, in the time frame I will be collecting from, the majority of people were largely ignorant (as some are to this day) of just how much of an effect the virus would have on our daily lives. The YouTube comment section is notorious for being one of the most toxic places to dwell on the internet, certainly not a place for nuanced, intelligent political discussion, and the raw unfiltered opinions of internet users who mainly hide behind the veil of anonymity is exactly what I’d like to gather.
I have filtered out any comments that appear to have been posted at a later day, and also those seem to be favored and pushed by YouTubes algorithms that had little to no real engagement. Initially, I attempted to simply youtube search the state of emergency address on my personal YouTube account, but I found that my search seemed very biased to a mostly left-lenient political view, as the Fox News upload of the speech was 27 places under the first suggestion YouTube provided for me, despite being the second most popular upload of the speech that I analyzed, at 1.8 millions views. Although I would normally avoid Fox News like the plague, the YouTube algorithms catering to my pre-established beliefs, as gathered from their observation on my behavior was disturbing, and I believe that algorithms like this across the internet are a massive contributor in the various factors that allow for the highly partisan, close-minded view points of many Americans. I would like for my opinions to at least have the possibility of being challenged, and YouTube automatically picked and chose which news sources it wanted to present to me, based on the picture it has painted of my character. I think that an algorithm that skews the accessibility of news sources is a major problem, and I feel that it is very intrusive in its potential to mold the minds of those who are easily impressionable, and wouldn’t take the time to question the powers determining what information is being fed to them. I believe that the confirmation-bias encouraging ways of these algorithms makes it much easier to fall too far into either side of the political spectrum, and can make it easier to fall into extremism, intolerance and a lack of empathy for opposing viewpoints.
After witnessing first-hand the peculiar ways of the YouTube machine, I decided to log into an old account I didn’t care to ever return to, and reset its search history on YouTube and google in order to wipe all possible previous information of potential political beliefs from my searches.
Literature Review:
The growing division between the American people is vital to understand because in a time like this, against an invisible, apolitical enemy, we should be united or at least on the same page in order to stop the spread and protect the general welfare of our fellow americans. The reason I have chosen to analyze the youtube comments section in particular for my data is that it is, for the majority of commenters, a far less personal form of social media than other alternatives such as facebook, instagram, and twitter, and it is easy to put out comments under a veil of anonymity that allows for the user to say whatever they want, in an unfiltered way. Certainty across other platforms, you have a choice to do and say as you please, but on a Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, there is more pressure to actually post your personal business, you face, your friends, occupation, acquaintances, and there is often more immediate repercussions socially for your actions if you post ignorantly on these more personal forms of social media.
I believe that through my analysis of the wild west that is the youtube comment section, we can illustrate the lack of consensus by the American people, influenced by partisanship, class privilege, and ignorance that is reinforced by a poor education system, a paranoia surrounding the media, and a naivete that allows for the rise and influence of Cult-Of personality figures such as Donald Trump.
I believe that my analysis is of utmost importance because of just how pressing of a matter COVID-19 is. One would hope that, given such a major crisis, that is inescapable, affecting each and every American, that the people would discover a sense of camaraderie and unity akin to that of World War 2 patriotism, banding together (metaphorically, not physically) to smartly combat the ever present threat of infection, right?
The diversity in perspective of Americans is (ideally) the cornerstone of the democratic system, and should be protected and maintained. The concept of conflicting ideas keeping each other in check was fundamental to American democracy since the nation's conception, however, the extent to which our divisions have grown are extreme, and it has led to the direction of our nation and will of our people seeming confused and lost. The lack of consensus about anything is hurting the U.S. and weighing us down in our fights against whatever challenges are thrown upon us as a nation.
As we have seen at this point, many Americans' priorities lay in radically different areas. We have massive crowds of conservatives shouting “USA” at government buildings, as if the virus has a nefarious leftist political agenda, and it was intentionally created to strip us of our rights and privilege. There are many who have strictly followed “social distancing” procedures out of fear and concern for their fellow citizens who have to deal with the potential consequences of their peers' lack of responsibility.
On this date of March, Friday the 13th, we were all poorly informed and anxious about this unknown new virus, unaware of just how far it would spread, and how much all of our lives would be changed.
Research Question
With my research I would like to observe how the views of Americans on Donald Trump’s handling of coronavirus differ across the political spectrum? What are some of the differences in priority, critique, and gripes amongst the American people given their different ideologies. How do the YouTube Commenters change their behavior to compensate for the different audiences that they are talking to?
Data Analysis:
I was certainly not prepared for just how many times I would read the words “toilet paper”. In the 350 top comments I viewed, 40, or approximately 11.23% of commenters had something to say about the toilet paper shortages that were occuring as a result of the initial panic induced by the spread of the coronavirus across the United States.
Points scored
I made this chart to illustrate the lack of focus on political commentary there was amongst the top 50 comments of each upload combined. Although one shouldn’t expect for every comment to be a serious political commentary, it is unhelpful to my goal of trying to understand the attitudes of Americans in this crisis.
I organized the topics of the comments into the various topical consistencies most prevalent throughout the top 50 comments of each upload, observing the patterns within the comments, and came up with five main different categories that the majority of comments fell under.
Humor- light hearted jokes with little in the way of substance or political commentary
Toilet Paper shortage related- Those comments berating their peers for their hoarding of Toilet paper and other supplies during the initial public consciousness around COVID-19
Trump Slander- That which provided a negative critique about Donald Trump's actions, broken into two sub categories, attacks on his character and intelligence, and attacks on his actions in the initial warning stages around COVID-19.
Trump Praise: Those Comments that commended president Trump for his handling of the pandemic situation, his resistance to the media, and his past actions.
Patriotism/Anti-China Remarks: Those comments that see the COVID-19 pandemic through a nationalist lense, arguing for economic separation from China and mistrust of the Chinese government in general. Often littered with left field conspiracy theories.

These “relatable” jokes and observations about the state of the world currently are important in keeping the morale of the people up, however, they had little to say about the writers opinions on president Trump, which is unhelpful in determining how the people feel about his actions.

all the parents who told their kids they'll never have a good career manufacturing toilet paper. looks who's laughing now
Out of the 350 main comments I sampled, 40 of them were related to the toilet paper shortage that swept america at the time. These were not terribly important, but are a curious look into the past that already feels long ago, as I had already forgotten that the toilet paper shortage even happened. Distant future readers of these comments will likely be confused at the context of these Toilet paper shortages that were discussed.

Trump made massive cuts to the CDC so I feel totally safe
The majority of the slander about Donald Trump concerned his speaking skills, appearance, and word choice. I didn’t include many comments in this section because so many people said the exact same things. With an overwhelming majority of comments poking fun at him saying “national emergency, Two very big words”. I was largely disappointed by the trump slander, as much of it seemed masturbatory, unoriginal, and unfunny. Although there was a massive amount of comments slandering Trump, far too many had anything important to say or contribute. The comment sections of those News publications that fell further on the left than that of Fox News were surprisingly very repetitive and uninteresting.
Trump Praise/Patriotism/Anti-China Remarks/Trump Praise:
These comments, all of which were found under the Fox News upload of Trump's speech, were unique in the priority they placed on the potential economic impacts of COVID-19. It seems that the more conservative viewers tuning into Fox News placed a much higher emphasis on how concerned they were with the state of the economy, often being somewhat dismissive of the potential lethality and spread of COVID-19 itself. These comments are all filled with a general sense of fear that the American government is being overtaken by foreign governments, namely China, in terms of being the world's largest economic superpower. Nowhere else in my surveyed comments did I see a single mention of China, or a desire to bring drug manufacturing back into the U.S.
Rae VH1:
My concern is why is China manufacturing 90% of our antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals? That's much scarier than the coronavirus
Gail Fitches:
We need to bring back making all pharmaceuticals and medical equipment in this country, because of the threat of chemical and biological warfare. Bring back all life saving measures to be made here in the USA.
1joecv1
Medical supplies and equipment should be "Made In America" and considered a National Priority. JOBS JOBS JOBS!
Cartesian Diver
Please bring drug manufacturing back to the US. We need an executive order to bring manufacturing back and put quotas on all drug imports. Manufacture our own drugs here in the USA. Shame on big pharma 😡
The comments section under Rae VH1’s comment, which topped the Fox news uploads comment section was extremely active, with 252 responses, including consistent back and forths between various commenters, debating on the issues of Big Pharma’s capitalization of the medical industry. I have chosen to analyze this particular thread, as there was many consistent back and forths between users, arguing their viewpoints,
Steve Stadel
Exactly!
Mary R Guy
I agree. Why the hell should our government even allow this!
ccc 4eva
You can thank previous administrations for that, starting with Bill Clinton. Thankfully Trump is trying to fix it.

President already Said Prior to this Virus, that Big Pharma needs to Manufacture in the USA.

Profits!
snapdragonfly66
Because it's all about profits for pharma. Trump allowed this. Capitalized healthcare doesn't work
These first comments all are outraged at the statistic thrown out by Rae, despite it having no sources or other forms of backing, agreeing with her sentiment and assuring that Donald Trump will have the answer when it comes to bringing pharmaceutical manufacturing to the U.S. and then user snapdragonfly66 adds the first critique of Trump in the thread, which results in a back and forth between him and several users, most consistently, user Samantha Reardon
Samantha Reardon
@snapdragonfly66 Actually Clinton allowed it and every other president before Trump kept it going until the last penicillin manufacturer in the US closed in the early '00s. Trump is trying to bring it back and has been advocating for bringing pharmaceuticals manufacturing back to the US for years.
snapdragonfly66
@Samantha Reardon he has had close to 4 years. Not a prioriity
Samantha Reardon
@snapdragonfly66 My point was that he has been talking about and working on bringing all kinds of manufacturing back here (the main focus wasn't originally on pharmaceuticals, just manufacturing in general, but I bet it will be now). To achieve this a lot has to be done to reverse things from previous administrations that allowed this to happen. Clinton started the snowball rolling, but Bush and Obama just kept it rolling and now it's huge and has to be broken.
snapdragonfly66
@Samantha Reardon it's a specifically American thing to consume in the amounts you all do. Most would rather have 5x pairs of Chinese made pants than 1 pair of American made. Reality is that US cannot produce anywhere near as cheaply as China
Samantha Reardon
@snapdragonfly66 I agree that is an American problem, a lot more of us need to realise quality over quantity. I think we also need to rebuild a sense of community and pride in our country and products as well. Over the last several years I have started actively looking for US products, they generally last longer.
The interaction between snapdragonfly and Samantha were surprisingly very civil and tame, and both sides acknowledged the views of the opposing stance with rebuttals that didn’t devolve into cheap insults. The pleasantness of the interaction between these two surprised me, as I assumed it would get ugly very fast.
PC GameBoy]
@snapdragonfly66 It being under socialism wouldnt change that.. They still need to get the meds made, and for cheap, and would still use China to get the products that way. Nothing is free, even under socialism. (which doesn't work without capitalism.)
User PC GameBoy introduced an accusation of snapdragonfly66 being socialist, which was never brought up by snapdragonfly himself, but appears to be a cheap insult (the term socialist is often seen as inherently negative by many American, especially those whose beliefs fall more on the right side of the political spectrum. The socialist accusation is a clear remnant of the cold war red scare, the beliefs of which are still present in American politics and media.
Craig Donaldson
Rae VH please site a credible source for your statistic.
Craig Donaldson is the first commenter to question any of the initial claim originally posted by the one who began the thread, every other commenter took the claim at face value, with no attempts to prove or disprove its legitimacy, which illustrates the fact that many of the commenters were not on the lookout for an entirely fact
Tami Shay
Rae VH do not take any medications this is scary I went to sams club and chicken is out of stock for month already and when I asked the associates they said chicken packages in China I was so scared what is not made in China on this earth it’s so scary maybe after this virus USA will start to make stuff made in USA
Comments like that of Tami Shay display the pure paranoia surrounding products made in China in the wake of the Coronavirus. Tami tries to convince Rae to avoid taking any medications, simply out of the fear of them coming from China. Politicians have, for years, advocated to bring manufacturing back to the USA, and have used fear tactics to gain the support of many in their efforts. COVID-19 coming from China has been a prime opportunity for those who advocate for American manufacturing to use the fear of the virus to push an anti-globalist stance, and many are now fearful of anything having to do with China, regardless of sanitation measures implemented, or the fact (according to China) that they now have the coronavirus under control and are experiencing very few new cases.
Brainbuster
We don't need to worry about that because Coronavirus cannot survive a trip over the ocean. The drugs made in China are shipped by sea, and the virus dies on the ride. Nothing to worry about.
Comments like this, especially in hindsight, highlight just how overly confident many Americans were that the Coronavirus could not make it to the United States, certainly not becoming a major threat with 10’s of thousands of casualties. Many Americans were not prepared to take proper precaution, largely ignorant of the very real threat of a spread into the U.S. that we now are becoming aware of. We have become very comfortable with our generally plush American lifestyles, and have been able to adopt a false sense of invincibility that COVID is now beginning to shatter.
Marc Miller We need to finish China off
Comments like those of Marc exemplify the “us vs them” mentality than many in the Fox comments section have, albeit much more upfront in its implications, believing that China must be our enemies, even though we are all suffering the same global struggle.
The comments section under this comment by User Livi O was the most heated I observed across any of the uploads.
Initial comment:
Livi O
We learn a lot, tremendous amount our President said! I hope that one of them is that we depend too much on China for medicine supplies!! It time to make America laboratories Great again!
We Need to be self sufficient! We need to
Responses:
Francesco De Filippis: You don't even have enough beds in hospitals ...thinking about medicines...did you listen what they said?
Francesco De Filippis expresses his concern about the medical situation in the United States, pointing out the fact that America is far too poorly equipped to deal with such a disaster as is occurring right now. Francesco points out the obvious flaws in the desire for America to produce all of its medicines immediately, as we are poorly equipped to handle this situation, however, his priority likely lies more in lives being saved than the original commentators desire for a U.S. economic production.
Rose Fincher
MORONS need to lay off the "medicine" PERIOD ~ all these 'cures' only serve to weaken the immune-system & make people sick ~ it's literally killing them & big pharma's getting filthy rich!! Why do ya think children are dying from frickin' peanut allergies?? SMMFH
Rose Fincher contributes with a conspiracy theory, insisting that all medicine is harming the American people, further contributing to the dangerous mistrust of the medical field that many on the right wing are adopting. Although rose is onto something when mentioning that big pharma has underhanded tactics which cost lives, her area of complaint is misguided.
soonkyu jang: I’m not blame Your optimism
But reality is opposite of your expectations
Now every American got anxious even panic
So this is the government’s failing agaiinst cononaviru , And this cause is president said Almost 4times not tell truth kind mis information and lying I’m Korean America first lm really worries about Korean , but right now situations is upside down We have to prepare when Korea has outbreak That is ready for test kit in federal and also we study Korean case and try adopt the teat epidemic . On things I want tell you is that Korean virus test 1000people and also there’s inspired from McDonald And Stabucks So the reason of this panic from Coronavirus is lost like goldtime and no preapreation and not studying different country case. Anyway the key point is totally government failing due to President overpride they failed totally Do you think this is America Great Again ? Shame on you Even we fall behind even South Korean has serious situation. This is America shames
Soonkyu as a Korean immigrant feels that the Donald Trump Administration has failed Americans by denying the threat of the coronavirus, and compares it’s handling to that of South Korea, who took the situation under control very quickly.
Rose Fincher: @soonkyu jang
A few MONTHS ago President Trump tried to STOP all travel from the area ~ the Congress/Federal Gvt would not let him!! Anyone reading Trump's tweets knows Xi Jinping assured him he had this under control.......this isn't our President failure....... STOP LISTENING TO FAKE NEWS!!
Rose chooses to deflect blame from Donald Trump using the term “fake news” that has been popularized in recent years by Donald Trump.
Dan Stun: @soonkyu jang Thank you for your post, aside from the broken English, you summed it up nicely. I wish more Americans would realize this. But they have too much pride in their vote for Trump and think its a game where they are winning or loosing based on who they voted for. I thinks its a big symptom of living in a digital world were people are growing up on video games and being codded to be honest.
Dan Stun seems to blame the political polarization on being a result of our lives of comfort and the influence of video games.
Rose Fincher
@Dan Stun
OY!! Project much Danny?? The majority of Trump voters AREN'T braindead video-addicts thinking this is some kind of LARP ~ they're hard-working, blue collar voters who are tired of this progressive, socialist crap!! Most of us didn't "grow-up on video games" ~ we went to work, joined the military, started families & know what gender we are!! So stoopid!!
Both Dan and Rose use ignorant stereotypes about the opposing side to fight their causes, attacking an assumed identity that they believe the other has, with both sides never really getting anywhere with their argument because they are more so attacks of (assumed) character than ideology.
Donna Grant:
@soonkyu jang G ... if you can't support our president and country then you are in the wrong country. Maybe you should go back to Korea.
@Dan Stun Keep perpetuating the hate... there's more than pride in the vote... we love this president. If you don't then maybe you should leave... we don't want socialists or communists in America. They are not welcome!!!
b t:
@Donna Grant Is that what you were saying when Obama was the President?
b t:
@Donna Grant When did you become the spokesperson for the United States?
jsmall106711 :
@Donna Grant like you supported Obama, right?
Jsmall10671 :
@Donna Grant did you stay in the US through 8 years of Obama?
Donna Grant attacks the Korean-American commenter, suggesting that he should “go back to his country” because he disapproves of the president, accusing him of being a socialist or communist despite having no sturdy basis for this claim. Users jsmall and b t then call the bluff of Donna Grant, asking her if she supported former president Barack Obama, which she never replied to.
Livi O: @soonkyu jang
dude this is a big "Wrong Situation" in the USA, a crappy Immigration system; allowing people like you to become a Citizen. I am Korean-american, Indian-american, Chinese-american, Italian-american... everyone says their country of origen with more (for lack of a better word) "pride" . First you are "K"orean then you are “a"merican, why did you become a Citizen when you’re not ready to have America first? I was born, lived and raise in a different country the first 20yrs of my life, I still love it, but at 30ys old I became a citizen, when anybody asks my answer is: "I AM AN AMERICAN"! I have the USA in my heart first! That’s why you can’t support our government, the people We’ve chosen to govern and to make the hard decisions in our best interests, America/American first then we should help every other country! This used to be the reasoning of all parties but the "Democratic" (ironic) people forgotten this! But it’s easy to understand why, most of their supporters are foreigners that became Citizens having something else in mind ! 😞 😞
The originator of the thread, Livi O then butts in to shame the Korean-American man for his disapproval of the actions of the U.S. Government, telling the man that he shouldn’t have been allowed to become a citizen because of his political views. Livi then claims that the majority of democrats are foreigners who are only loyal to their home country.
TestingTheNarrative
Absolutely! Don't rely on others. . .Do it Yourself!
No one else could have done this job the way he has! Thanking God daily for President Trump!
The thread ends with blind Trump praise that celebrates his actions. The thread was a rollercoaster ride of name calling, racism, ignorance, and blind patriotism, that saw both opposing sides berating each other, making assumptions of the other strangers character, and believing that the media forces “fake news” on the people that results in their beliefs.
Conclusion
I took issue with and was disappointed by the fact that the majority of comments on every upload besides that of Fox News offered little in the way of true political commentary, with far too many critiques of Trump being related to his appearance, speaking skills and word choice. I believe that the lack of seriousness and focus in this comment section seems to suggest that many on the left are not serious about politics, which allows for such a polarizing president like Trump to take power in the first place. By far, the most interesting and entertaining place to read about people opinions on Trump was that of Fox News, which offered much in the way of crack-pot conspiracy theories, xenophobia, racism, and anger, however, there was far more true political debate on the more right wing side of things (regardless of how factual that was), and the difference between Fox News’ comment section and the others was night and day. One thing I did find consistently across all uploads of the speech were random encouraging words and well-wishes to anybody who might be reading, which was in a way very heartwarming. Across all political lines there are people who simply want good health for each other, and all Americans likely share this sentiment in some capacity (I hope), however they get their path to improving the world for their neighbors clouded by their loyal subscription to their political identity. Overall I think that the American people are far too wrapped up in being “right”, fighting to get their opinion across and be accepted, rather than listening to the opinions of others and taking them into account. U.S. citizens all have radically different beliefs on what is a “good” response to this pandemic, and their priorities lie in very different places. I believe that this political division and confusion in the midst of an invisible, apolitical threat could be deadly, as it has shown to be, and will likely continue to be for the foreseeable future.
